Weekly Round-up

The highlight of this week, as well as England getting through to the Finals, has to be the wonderful sports morning we had and that the weather was kind to us!

On Wednesday morning, Mrs MacIntyre and Mr Davis organised another amazing sports day where we competed individually and also as teams in our houses. The children all tried their best in their individual events and as part of a team. They demonstrated the sports values and should be very proud of what they achieved. There was lots of cheering, some laughter (fancy dress team event) and smiles. A huge thank you to the children and an even bigger thank you to Mrs MacIntyre and Mr Davis.

In English this week, we have been writing our own newspaper reports linked to our story, The Mousehole Cat. We have focused on a different feature each day and have used our phonics work on suffixes and prefixes. The children should be very proud of their reports; they worked really hard!

In Maths, the children have continued to look at time and the language associated with it. They have been looking at half past and comparing times, using key language such as ‘earlier’ and ‘later’.

In Science, we had great fun investigating the best material for an umbrella. We enjoyed being scientists, predicting which materials would be waterproof/absorbent and writing up our results afterwards.

BUG CLUB NEEDS YOU!

Bug Club is a really good reading platform but we can see that not many of the children are using it. Please try and help your child access this at least a couple of times each week. If you are having any problems accessing it please let us know.

Weekly Round-up

The weeks seem to passing at an alarming rate now that the end of term is in sight and it’s been another busy week.

In English this week, we have continued looking at The Mousehole Cat. We have sequenced the story using pictures and then the children created their own story map, drawing pictures and writing sentences to go with each part of the story. Today, we used this plan to write a recount of the story, focusing on including lots of adjectives and even some conjunctions too!

In Maths the children have started to look at time and the language associated with it. Please reinforce days of the week and months of the year if your child still has difficulty identifying and sequencing these. They have also started to look at o’clock and identifying where the hour and minutes hands should face.

As part of our DT work we have started thinking about puppets, how they are made and the different features. We looked at lots of different types of puppets and the children drew their favourite in their books and had a go at labelling the features.

In Science, we had great fun recapping different materials and finding objects around the school and our classrooms that are made from materials like metal, wood, plastic, glass and fabric.

BUG CLUB

The children have all got a username and password for Bug Club, which is an invaluable reading resource. Please support your child in accessing this resource and if you have any difficulties please get in touch. It would be great if your child could access Bug Club at least a couple of times a week, not only does it help your child with their reading but also the comprehension of what they are reading.

Weekly Round-up

We had an exciting start to the week with our opening ceremony for Sports Week. After an inspiring assembly from Mrs MacIntyre and discussion about the sports values we all went on to the school field (in our bubbles and socially distanced) to watch the flag bearers launch this year’s Sports Week.

Our Sports Values are Determination, Self-Belief, Respect, Teamwork, Passion and Honesty. We talked about how these values are important in all that we do, not just during sports week! We recognised children showing these values with a shiny sports week sticker!

We have seen some fantastic teamwork this week during our class competitions. On Tuesday, we had obstacle races, which was great fun, along with the competition that the children did with Mr Davis on Wednesday. The children also showed great determination and skill during out target throwing competition on Thursday, where there was lots of positivity and kindness shown. To end a fantastic week of class competitions, we played football rounders, with the children taking part in 3 games against different teams from their partner class. We hope they enjoyed this as much as all the adults did! Well done to Class 4, who were our overall winners but also to Class 3, who showed brilliant self-belief and sportsmanship.

The children have also participated in a personal challenge this week; How many times can you hit a ball up in a row with a racket? We practiced on Monday to see what our starting point was and then practiced everyday, trying to achieve a higher score as the week went on. We talked a lot about being honest and how it was ok if they didn’t beat their score everyday, as long as they’ve tried their best!

In English this week we have focused on our life skill: empathy. The children have been identifying examples of characters showing empathy in stories and even had a go at planning and writing our own empathy stories at the end of the week!

In Maths, the children have finished their work on place value to 100. We have been comparing numbers by looking at tens and ones, finding one more and one less and using 100 squares to fill in missing number jigsaws.

BUG CLUB

The children have all got a username and password for Bug Club, which is an invaluable reading resource. Please support your child in accessing this resource and if you have any difficulties please get in touch. Weekly Round-up

It has been an incredibly sunny and warm week and it has been good to see the children coming in prepared with their suncream, hats and water bottles. Please remember to make sure these are named.

As part of our English work, we have started to look at The Mousehole Cat. We focused on the front cover to start with and had a go at predicting what the story would be about. We then wrote a description of the setting, using adjectives and expanded noun phrases. The children did a fantastic job!

In Maths the children have been looking at place value to 100. We have been partitioning the numbers into tens and ones and comparing numbers using greater than, less than and equal to.

Our topic focus this term is Science, where we will be looking at materials. This week we had a go at identifying different materials and describing them using words such as ‘transparent’, ‘opaque’ and ‘waterproof’.

We had the opportunity this week to have a look at the Arts Week ‘window’ Exhibition. It was great to see what the other year groups had been doing – such wonderful creativity and the children really enjoyed looking at them. You should receive an email link today which will enable you to watch a video of the children’s work from last week. We hope you enjoy it.

SPORTS WEEK

Next week is sports week and the children can come to school in their PE kits every day as we will be doing something sporty each day. Please can you make sure your child has a water bottle. We will be thinking about the importance of healthy lifestyles and exercise. We will also be focusing on this term’s life skill – empathy.

Weekly Round Up

We hope you all had an enjoyable half term and enjoyed the sunshine!

It has been a busy and creative week due to it being our 2021 Arts Week, ‘What’s the story?’

Our focus text has been ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Anthony Browne. We have had lots of interesting discussions about the setting and have written a descriptive piece focusing on the forest and the gingerbread house.

The children have experimented with lots of different techniques and worked with different materials. Our focus was on houses, inspired by the illustrations from the story. They have created clay houses, patchwork houses, cardboard tube houses and had lots of fun painting terracotta pots outside. They have produced independent pieces of art and a whole-class piece – our fantastic hanging forests! You can see a small selection from the week in the photos below. There will be a video with these and additional photos in emailed to you at the end of next week and also keep an eye on our classroom window!

In Maths the Year 1 children have been looking at position and direction. We’ve been learning our left and rights and other positional language in lots of different ways!

BUG CLUB

The children have all got a username and password for Bug Club, which is an invaluable reading resource. Please support your child in accessing this resource and if you have any difficulties please get in touch. Weekly Round-Up

This week, despite starting a little wet, the weather has been much better, which meant we could finally have playtimes on the field and enjoy some outdoor learning!

It was great to speak to you this week during our parents evening calls; thank you for giving us your time.

As part of our English work this week, the children have compared ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’ stories and used the conjunction ‘because’ to explain which we preferred. We also created our own solution to the pesky seagull problem! The children did a great job at writing these up using this term’s learning.

In Maths the Year 1 children have enjoyed learning about ‘mass’, using the balances to weigh and compare objects. We also recapped one more and one less using numbers to 50.

We completed our art focus on printing this week. The children created their own printing tile and then used these to create multiple prints, inspired by Andy Warhol – messy but fun and some great results.

ARTS WEEK 2021

The first week after half term will be our annual arts week. This year we are using a text as our focus; planning our English and arts activities around this text. If your child has access to one of your old shirts/t-shirts that could be worn to protect their school uniform please bring it in (named) on Monday 7th June, the start of term 6.

We are planning lots of different activities and will put together a film to share with you as we are unable to hold an exhibition again  this year.

Weekly Round-up

In English, the children have worked hard on their letters to Mr Grinling this week and are looking forward to ‘posting’ them next week. These will be sent home for you to have a look at. Their letter writing has included many processes, including looking at an example of a letter, use of the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘because’, questions and expanded noun phrases.

In Maths, the children have continued to look at fractions – finding quarters of shapes and amounts.

We had a real treat on Wednesday afternoon – we were invited to watch Year 6’s dress rehearsal of their Indian dances. The children choreographed their own dance pieces which was very much enjoyed; some of the audience joined in trying to copy the moves. It was great fun.

Weekly Round-up

A shorter week and another busy week which culminated in our support of the NSPCC Number Day. Thank you very much for your support, the NSPCC does an invaluable job and hopefully the children have a better idea of their role in helping to keep children safe.

In Maths, the children have been looking at making equal groups through sharing – the beginnings of division. This will lead nicely to our work with fractions next week.

As part of our English work, the children have looked in more detail at using exclamation marks in their writing. We have now looked at one word exclamations and writing exclamation sentences starting with ‘what’ and ‘how’. They used all of this knowledge to write a recount of the story.

The children have been working on throwing with accuracy in PE over the recent weeks. This week we put all of our skills to use and took part in a throwing golf competition! In Geography, we looked at human and physical features at the seaside, where the children identified and sorted different features.

How are you getting on with Street Tag? On Thursday we were top of the leader board. Please help us to stay on top!

Weekly Round Up

This week we have continued our work on multiplication in Maths. We have been looking at and describing arrays and we’ve been making doubles. We will keep practicing these so the children know them off by heart.

In Literacy, we have continued looking at our story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We have enjoyed a bit of drama this week where the children have been acting out the story in groups. We have also carried on our work on exclamation marks, where we’ve been looking at commands e.g. Leave my sandwiches alone! The children came up with some other fantastic examples.

In Geography we found out about seaside towns and compared them to Bicester. In Art, we started our work on printing and looked at lots of different examples of printing.

We have had a coach from Wildcats to work with Class 4 girls this Friday, working on their football skills. Class 3 girls have lots to look forward to when it’s their turn next Friday. We’ve also all had great fun this week exploring our new Adventure Trail.

Don’t forget Street Tag starts again on Saturday so get those walking shoes on!

Next Friday is the NSPCC Number Day, where we can all come in dressed as a digit. If possible, we’re looking for our Year 1s to come in a digit from 0-50 so we can link it in with our learning. This might include football shirts with numbers or sticking a number on an old t-shirt – anything you can think of! Please don’t go out and buy anything. As well as raising awareness for the NSPCC, please can you donate £1 on the day.

Weekly Round-Up

Welcome back! What a great start to the week, the sun was shining which added to that ‘beach’ feel. We had a great day being creative and playing outdoor games. We also got very crafty and made beach huts and paper plate seagulls!

In Maths we have been counting in 10s, making equal groups and repeated addition as the start of some work on multiplication.

Our focus text in English for the next few weeks is ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ by Ronda and David Armitage. We’ve been looking at the front cover and predicting what we think might happen in the story. The children have also thought of some fantastic adjectives to describe the nouns they could see!

Just a reminder, Street Tag will be back on May 1st. Until then we are checking daily with the children about how they travelled to school as part of our ‘Big Pedal’ data collection. Well done to everyone for taking part!
